Upcycled Wooden Bowl Wall Art

The other day I was out thrift shopping at the local Restore and found these amazing wood bowls.  I purchased them not knowing exactly what they would be used for, but I knew I wanted to create some type of wall art.  After I finished my thrift store haul I stopped by JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts and started gathering supplies for my projects.  I purchased a variety of paints, yarn, and three very cool pendants for necklaces.  Once I returned home my ideas starting coming together.  I knew I wanted to create something Boho inspired with a geometric flair, so I started by perusing Pinterest for ideas.  It wasn't long before I started cutting out different shapes from tag board and assembling these shapes into different geometric patterns.  From there I converted these geometric patterns into painted images on paper.  Once I was satisfied with my creations I taped off the different images in the bottom of the bowls and painted until my heart was content.   Here is what I created and I hope it inspires you to turn your everyday items into art.

Materials Needed:

• Wood Bowls any size preferably with a flat bottom and flat interior
• Tag Board to create geometric shapes
• Pencil
  
• Scissors
• Painters Tape
• Paint Brushes
• Acrylic Paint - I used DecoArt Royal Navy, DecoArt Mermaid Tail, & Liquitex Titanium White
• Yarn in coordinating colors
• Jewelry Pendants or Necklace Charms
• Super Glue
• Sawtooth Hanger

Step by Step Instructions:

1. Throughly clean the bowls
   
2. Draw or trace out shapes from tag board.  I chose a basic triangle.  Then cut out the shapes and plan your layout (which shape should be painted first).
   
3. Trace these shapes onto the interior bottom of the bowl.
   
4. Place painters tape along lines (make sure it is stuck down really well so paint doesn't seep.
   
5. Paint inside the taped off section (I painted the first two triangles using the mermaid tail teal)
   
6. Apply 2-3 coats and allow to dry in between coats
   
7. Remove tape once paint has dried.  Trace next shape and repeat steps 4-6.  I used Royal Navy for the third triangle and the titanium white for the final triangle.
8. Once dry remove tape from final shape.
   
9. Choose a coordinating yarn and tie around the bowl several times (5-7), leave a tail to tie on the tassel and/or pendant.
   
10. At this point you can simple add the pendant without the tassel and secure the yarn to bowl with super glue or you can add a tassel.
    
11. Make the tassel. 
    
12. Wrap yarn loosely around a pen or paint brush creating loops (I used about 10 feet of yarn, but you can make yours however full).
    
13. Cut a 24 inch piece of yarn and slide through the top of the loops making sure to have all the yarn loops together.  Tie once, leaving one side significantly longer that the rest. (don't knot you will have to remove later)
    
14. Cut a 6 inch piece of yarn and wrap once around tassel about 1 inch down from the top and tie on pendant.  Leave tails.
    
15. Take longer end of tail from step 13 and make a loop at the top of the tassel entending down past the pendant and looping again.  Hold at center and wrap several times around the entire tassel and around tails of pendant tie.  (Confusing, I know.  You might want to practice making a tassel before attaching the pendant.  Also, watch the video for a better understanding)
    
16. Then put end through bottom loop and pull top loop gently pulling bottom to top securing ends.  Cut tails close to wrapped section of tassel, secure with super glue.  Cut bottom loops creating fringe.
    
17. Using the ties from the yarn around the bowl tie around the tassel top through all the loops.   Hide tie ends under wrapped portion of the yarn around the bowl securing with super glue.
    
18. Finally, nail on the small sawtooth hanger to the upper backside, now you may hang your creation.
